Álvaro Casal Ramírez | Country Manager Uruguay APPLUS+: "We carry out 85,000 inspections a year"

Applus+ is a world leader in regulatory vehicle inspection services and emissions and gas testing solutions worldwide. It performs more than 20 million inspections each year in Europe, North America, Central America and South America, making it a truly global and recognised organisation in the field of vehicle inspection.

I wanted to start by asking you about the trucks. What percentage of them have to be returned due to a defect?

The average has been stable for three years now at 40%, as regards the number of vehicles that are returned for re-inspection, either due to serious or very serious defects, i.e. those rejected or those that are conditional. Those rejected that remain for 24 hours are 14% and of the rest, 26% are conditional.

Is there a common denominator regarding the failures?

Yes, the faults are mainly 75% brake defects; second, lighting issues; third, axles; fourth, suspension.

The rest are bodywork defects, interior fittings, issues that are not so relevant to road safety, but which also qualify as serious or very serious defects. And of these defects, the distribution, as I was saying, is mainly concentrated in brakes, brake defects have a slightly lower concentration than the general distribution of defects. On average, 14% are very serious defects, but in brakes only 8% are very serious defects and the rest are serious.

How many vehicles pass through APLUS annually?

There are 50,000 vehicles, we carry out 85,000 inspections a year.

Obviously they are all heavy vehicles, right?

Yes, almost all of them, some cars appear, some companies that require a technical inspection or some state agency, they carry small vehicles, but the vast majority are, yes, heavy. But in the vast majority of cases they are those established in the concession contract, which are cargo vehicles of more than 3.5 tons of Gross Vehicle Weight and passenger vehicles, which operate under the DNT.
